Promoting a Movie: The "Real" Work

With the cast & crew back from Sundance, I was hit with the reality that getting the word out about Nominated would be a lot harder than expected. There are just so many independent films out there, and a ton of competition vying for a spot in the program at the latest film fest. The bottom line is a filmmaker has to be persistent and resilient and creative with the methods that she promotes her film (I say "she" because I saw a strong contingent of female lead films at Sundance).

We did take the film to the California Independent Film Festival in Moraga. It played to a small audience, but I have to say, it was fantastic seeing all of our hard work up on the big screen! We're still trying hard to get into more festivals, and hopefully there will be some more big screen time for the movie.

In the meantime, while we try to chase DVD distribution, and video-on-demand options like itunes & Netflix & Hulu, we're starting to work on a few new projects. The first is a very funny web series (the title of which I can't say) that will star Ken Newman and Brian Degan Scott. Once again, we will try to use the talents of cast & crews from the Bay Area. My intention is to help keep the community of film/video thriving in Nor Cal. The other two projects that have been started are in the scripting phase. One is a dark comedy set in the world of competitive pumpkin growing (no kidding), which I'm co-writing with Brian Degan Scott. The other is a thriller involving cloning, which I've started with an old friend, but brand new writer, Vince Zuanich. Both stories show great promise.

And if that weren't enough, I decided to teach a few screenwriting classes for people who'd like to write a movie, but have no idea how to get started on a script. This is script writing 101, and it will give novices all the nuts & bolts of how a screenplay is put together (all the stuff that took me years through trial & error - lots of error). They will be small classes, and I think it will be a lot of fun for people who happen to be passionate about movies, like I am. Nominated Goes Gorilla at Sundance

It's been three years since the script for Nominated was written, and now some of the cast & crew are enjoying a week in beautiful Park City Utah as the small ski town host the world renowned Sundance Film Festival.

Despite the fact that we didn't get into the festival, we are taking the festival by storm. We hit the streets with tee shirts, buttons, ski caps and water bottles, promoting the movie and acting like we belong. We had some great success so far, making lots of contacts and spreading the word about the best indie comedy that DIDN'T get into the festival.

Our condo "headquarters is graced by the presence of Brian Degan Scott, Ken Newman, Greg Cala, Kari Wishingrad, Mark Flores and Dave Cowan. Kari (the gal with the plan) got us all VIP All-Access passes today, which got us into the SWAGG Lounge with all the other celebs. We reveled in the free stuff as we filled our bags with goodies from sponsors and then adjourned to the Stella Artois Cafe for a free lunch. I can't speak for the rest of them, but this is the first time in the movie-making process that I actually felt like a star.

We're having a blast, and it's only the third day of the festival. Tomorrow where going to see some industry panels, and then we'll finally get to see some of the films here at Sundance. It's been a thrill so far, and I can't wait to see what unfolds in the next few days.

The Festival SWAG is Here!

As we anxiously await the announcements of the 32 film festivals we have submitted to, the process of creating promotional give-away items (or SWAG) has begun. With the help of one of the movie's visual effects guys, Mike Banks, we created a great logo for the shirts, buttons and hats we'll give away.
It's customary at festivals for filmmakers to give out stuff - mostly to get people at the fests to come see your movie. This was news to me, since I figured that if the people were already at the event, they were there to see movies, right? Not the case at all. Seems the atmosphere at film festivals is very competitive regarding the eyeballs that each film can attract.
So, we started a SWAG fund at Kickstarter.com, to help defray the costs of all these promo items. You can click the link and contribute a small amount to get one of these tee shirts, a button and a movie poster! Most of all, it would be helpful if you could pass the link along to your friends via email, Twitter, Facebook or however it is you reach your peeps these days.

Taking Nominated on the Road

So the movie has been completed, test screenings held, final re-edits made...now what? Great question. The answer is, we take the movie on the film festival circuit (no, there's not an official circuit that you just sign up for, but rather hundreds - nay, thousands - of festivals that occur around the country throughout the calendar year. So we opened our withoutabox account, and begin to peruse the massive list of festivals for 2011.

To date, we have entered 30 festivals, starting with the Big Kahuna, The Sundance Film Festival. We have aligned perfectly with the calendar, since Sundance requires that your movie premiere in Park City. So, since Sundance announces their film lineup in December, we'll find out long before we have to commit to any other festivals. We just got lucky with that one. We're also entered in South by Southwest, Santa Barbara, Cinequest, Dallas, Seattle, Las Vegas, and Manhattan Film festivals to name a few.

Whether we get in or not, we are making the trip to Park City to market the movie to the attendees. Hopefully an indie distributor will get a DVD and like what she sees. We plan on taking a projector and screen so we can show the movie in the town square (that's of course IF we don't get in). We're also pursuing a sponsorship from The Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Hopefully they will pay for the ski caps, posters and tee shirts that will be co-branded with the Nominated "Has-Been" logo & The Academy's logo. Seems like a perfect fit.

In other news, the movie's star, Brian Degan Scott, is busy preparing for a new play, Coroline, at The SF Playhouse. Co-star, Carl Lumbly, is in the middle of another production, Sunset Limited, also at The SF Playhouse. Go see those plays, they're fantastic!

Lastly, we have updated the Nominated media page with new collateral material so that media types, and anybody else interested, can now download it directly. There is a brand new press kit with many still frames from the movie, a cool new movie poster, and a brand new movie trailer. All great stuff.

As always, I'd like to thank everyone for supporting the movie. It would be great to see you all out at a festival as the film gets unleashed on the world. So far, we've had nothing but positive feedback (except for that one jerk from Oakland), and I hope to keep the momentum rolling forward!

Final stages

Well, the movie is done! Thanks to all the input we received from all our friends and family at the "focus group" style screenings of the film, we got the movie down to it's final stage! Once Dan felt that it was ready, we submitted it to a few film festivals, including Sundance! Everyone keep your fingers crossed.

Then, in August, we had the big screening at Chanticleers Theater in Castro Valley. There were about 100 people in attendance and it was a big success! There was champagne and a nice barbequed chicken dinner served by our Chef, Mike Nepodal. Everyone loved the film and enjoyed the evening.

Unfortunately, Dan couldn't be there and Dave stepped in as the host.

We're planning to have a screening of the film in the Arnold area. But for now, there's nothing on the calendar. Hopefully there will be soon! We'll try to keep everyone posted.

Almost ready...

We have a complete version of the movie! Brian, Dave, Ben and I have watched the whole thing through and made some editing decisions and we are working on getting it edited down to a good, watchable length. But now it's time to let others watch it and give us their input. So the Movie is in the "focus group" stage right now. Hopefully, we'll have a final version before July is over. Then we'll have a major public screening for everyone we know! Hold on tight... it's almost ready!

I want to thank Ben Figueiredo for his heroic efforts, working on the color and the audio sweetening of the Movie. Ben has been amazing. He's put in a ridiculous amount of time and effort and for very little compensation. And now, sadly, Ben is moving on in his career and will be leaving California for bigger and better things. Thanks Ben... we'll miss you and your dedication.

Well... that's it! The final footage is "in the can". The last shoot, the
"community theater" stuff was shot at Chanticleers Theater in Castro Valley. We got everything we needed and the movie is now in the post production stage. If all goes well, we should have a first screening by mid-July.

The last two days of shooting went well, thanks to many wonderful people! I'd like to thank Chanticleers Theater, and especially Floyd and Gary, for their hospitality and help. And of course permission to use their great little theater. Chanticleers fit our needs perfectly. And Floyd and Gary bent over backwards to accommodate any needs that we had. And our actors did a fantastic job! Lance and Donna were amazing, as always. And what can I say about Brian... this movie wouldn't exist without the talent of my friend Brian Scott. He did a fantastic job, as usual. Thanks Brian for sacrificing your skin for the make up! And all our extras did a great job too. Thanks to the crew for all their work and time. And especially Dave Cowan... not only for his film crew work, but for catering the shoot as well!

We're feverishly working on the post production now. There will be several
screenings, hopefully in a
neighborhood near you!

The Oscars Come To Town!

Not sure why I did this, but I managed to save the four most complicated scenes for the end of the production?? Maybe it was the complicated logistics of locations, numerous extras, wardrobe and the ever-present budget constraints - or maybe I was just scared to face the challenges. Who knows?

Either way, I'm happy to report that two of the aforementioned complicated scenes are done!

We knocked off the Red Carpet scene and the Oscar Kodak Theater scene. With the help of many wonderful volunteers - both in front of the camera and behind - we got some wonderful footage. The shoots took two solid days (all of which will cover about three pages of the script), but the results are fantastic!

I'd be remiss if I did not thank the wonderful people at Ohlone College in fabulous Fremont, CA for the use of the beautiful Jackson Theater, as well as Creative Video Services for the use of their Panasonic HPX3000 camera. Without either of those fantastic supporters, we would not have been able to get the scenes to look realistic.

So, that leaves us with two remaining scenes to shoot - believe it or not! We started shooting in November of 2009, and we should wrap in a few weeks. What a crazy and fantastic ride it has been.

By the way, the two remaining scenes are set in a small community theater, and we're still looking for a location. Anybody with a lead to a great location in the SF Bay Area, please send me a note at: dan@nominatedthemovie.com

We're in the Home Stretch!

Brian Degan Scott & Ken Newman work the scene

We wrapped an exciting day of shooting at the Fabulous Mojo Lounge in Fremont, CA. The owner, Dennis Briggs, was an unbelievably gracious host as he watched us take over his bar. This was a tough morning, starting with the 5:30 a.m. call time, through the bucking hooker shots (what a degenerate my star is).

This is a big scene in the movie - scene 3 to be exact - as it sets up the entire story. We shot we the Panasonic HPX 3000, courtesy of Creative Video Services, and the camera was incredible in the low light environment. We were able to shoot with almost 100% available light from the bar's lighting. We only supplemented the practical lights with a 150 watt key on the actor's faces, and a 300 watt to light up the far background.

Couple more scenes to go, and we can wrap the shooting!! The editing has been on-going, so we're probably 40% done with that. We'll have a few tests screening when we're done, so stay tuned for those dates.

Shooting Completed in Arnold!!

We just wrapped the shooting in Arnold -- and just under the wire with the weather. Boy did it get ugly fast, and just as we were packing up. Now the remaining 20 scenes are in the Bay Area, and most are very short.

The movie gods aligned for us, as we not only had help with the weather, but from a kind CHP Officer and a terrific theater director. While shooting at a vista point on Hwy 4, the officer pulled up to make sure everything was okay. I thought he was going to shut us down, but he was just interested in our production and was quickly on his way. He must have called a fellow officer to tell him about it, because a half hour later another one pulled up to watch for a minute before leaving.

The theater director at the Black Bart Playhouse in Murphys was great. We were shooting a quick exterior scene as the main character passes the marquee of the theater, and the director came out and offered to change the marquee to suit our needs. That was awesome of him!

Anyway, lots of good fortune for us in Arnold, great performances by Brian Degan Scott, Ken Newman, and Lance Smith. Now we need to wrap up the Bay Area shoots and finish editing.

Executive Producer Winners - You Picked 'Em!

I excited to announce that after an intense month of voting, Karen M. & Karen S. have been voted in as the Executive Producers for Nominated. That means that they will both receive an on-screen credit, as well as a listed credit on IMDB.com.

Speaking of which, we just got listed!! I'm really happy about it, because from all accounts I've read and heard, it's near impossible for an indie movie to get listed on IMDB while still in production. So, if you wanna see our listing on the premiere internet movie site, just click Nominated.

I'd like to thank the five finalists from our essay contest, and all of those who participated in the voting. It's always fun to include as many people as possible in our shenanigans. We've Wrapped on 8 Days in Arnold, CA

We had a VERY productive 8 days of shooting up at the cabin location in Arnold. We shot 16 pages of the script in the first two days - incredible! To put that into perspective, a major studio production will average about 4 pages a day (if they are efficient).

We started the week with Carl Lumbly and Brian Degan Scott, and then had to take a break as Carl was called away to the new NBC TV show Trauma.

During the break we took the opportunity to put some locals to work as extras, shooting them in the neighborhood as they rake their pine needles. This is a constant source of work and exercise in Arnold, as the needles NEVER stop falling. The cool thing during that time was that a local reporter, Kate Gonzales of the Calaveras Enterprise, visited the set and wrote up a nice story. You can read all about The Nominated Top Story, as they have an online version of the paper.

Toward the end of the week we had Jette Newell, Soren Oliver and Julia Smyth join us for two days of great work and hilarious times. We had a lot of fun shooting the scenes with these fine actors, despite the sub-45 degree weather. There was a lot of quick taking off and putting back on of jackets and sweaters between takes.

So, we beat the snow for the most part, as 98% of the exteriors in Arnold have been taken care of. We will visit the mountains once or twice more, but only for 2 days at a time, and mostly indoors.

Next up for us are two days of shooting in the fabulous Backdoor Lounge in Fremont, CA. It's a small bar that will play the perfect double for a small-town mountain watering hole.

As a note, we are still looking for extras for the LA bar scene and the "red carpet" scene (both will be shot in the Bay Area).

My Hometown Paper Writes Me Up

Howdy Everyone.

I was born in fabulous Fremont, California. Home to such notables as MC Hammer, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Hall of Fame pitcher Dennis Eckersley. Heck, even the Quarter Pounder from McDonald's was invented in Fremont.

So, when the local Fremont newspaper, The Argus, came calling for an interview with me regarding the movie, I was honored and excited. If you'd like to give it a read, you can click to check out The Story. I think Matt Artz did a very nice job - and most of it is true!

As a side note (like this isn't really the reason for this whole thing), we've begun shooting the movie. we've just knocked out a few scenes here and there, but so far it's been a blast and the footage is terrific.

Brian Degan Scott Returns: SF Area Scenes to be shot soon!

Well, Brian Degan Scott has returned triumphantly from New York
City and the off Broadway showings of the play he was in:
Abraham Lincoln's Big Gay Dance Party.

Below are several links and mentions in the press.

One that was particularly cool was from the NY Post which suggests
a possible comparison between the play and Urine Town. What you
may know is that Urine Town also showed during the NY Fringe Festival
and was picked up for an off-Broadway and then Broadway run.

Not too shabby. :-)

I am sure Dan wishes him and the cast well with
future possibilities, but after the film gets shot
first! (More details to come, as there will be filming
this month, and next.)

All Wine, No Cheese!

We had a terrific fundraiser the other night at Fremont's best wine bar, Vida y Vino! Owner Audrey Scott (2nd from left in photo) was as gracious as ever and the crowd was fantastic.

Many of the cast members showed up, including co-star and veteran of TV & Film, Carl Lumbly. Carl was greeted by a throng of fans, and he proceeded to "hold court" for the next two hours. The best, and most excited fan was one of the waiters at Vida, who promptly told Carl that his girlfriend had just given him all 4 seasons of Alias on DVD. He had just watched them all, and couldn't believe that Dixon (Carl's character name) was in the wine bar! He was thrilled to get an autograph, and a picture on his phone, which he immediately sent to his girlfriend.

The movie gained many new supporters who are excited to follow along as we charge headlong into shooting in three weeks. Events like this really underscore the grass-roots effort we are employing to get the movie produced, and we are so grateful to everyone who has helped out.

Other notables in attendance were Fremont City Councilman Bill Harrison, and cast members Greg Cala, Ken Newman, Gary Neil, Julia Smyth & Mark Flores (the last 2 not in photo). The movie's star, Brian Degan Scott was absent only because he is currently in New York performing in the hilarious hit play Abe Lincoln's Big Gay Dance Party.

We have great momentum, but need to continue to push to meet our budget goals. As always, you can donate to the film by going to the Nominated Sponsor Page (nominatedthemovie.com/donate.htm). Road Trip: Dan and Brian in the Los Angeles Area

As I write this, Dan and Brian are in the Los Angeles

area getting ready to meet with a potential actress

for a role in the film. She is someone you may know -

Erin Moran. Hopefully by the next blog entry you

will know if she will be taking a part in the film as

Cole's mom (Dana).

Last night I met up with Dan and Brian in Hollywood,

and while they were having some fun shooting some

video, I was shooting them. I was using a Flip

Camcorder (which is pretty awesome and portable,

btw).

I will edit the video at some point. I was hoping it

wouldn't be as much of a process as the radio show

was but now, LOL, I am not so sure.

I had a lot of fun with them, and am fairly certain the

official set will be just as easy going and fun as last

night was. By the way, there will be a large scene that

Dan will be filming in the San Francisco area that will

require a number of people with non-speaking parts.

If you are in that area, check back soon for more

details on how to possibly participate.

Meeting the "Big Time" Director

I got a chance to sit in on a screening of the new film "Funny People", which stars Adam Sandler. It was written, directed and produced by Judd Apatow. Judd is in the midst of the hottest producing streak in Hollywood right now, with such hits as Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad and I Love You Man. The screening was in front of the first "regular" audience, so Judd was in attendance to take questions and get feedback from the group. Here's what I took away from that event:

1. The work just begins once a movie is shot. There's a ton of PR and travel that must be done when a movie is released.

2. There are still some very nice people in Hollywood. Judd is a legitimate star, and he could not have been a more generous person with his time.

3. Nothing beats a really good story - which "Funny People" is. The best acting and directing in the world cannot cover up a bad story.

4. Comedy and emotion are a great combination. That is why I'm so excited about my story! When you can make 'em laugh and cry in the same movie, you've got something.

So, I'm more fired up than ever about making a movie. We just finished casting and we have an outstanding group of actors. I think they're gonna help me become a big time director. I'll tell you all about them next post!

"Local" Press heating up for the Production

As we draw closer to the actual shooting (especially in the Arnold, CA location), the excitement and support grows. I've been getting many calls from local shops, Realtors and residents asking how they can lend a hand to the movie - and I thank you all for the offers! The easiest way for individuals to contribute is to enter the Executive Producer Essay Contest - it's fun, cheap and might get you a big fat movie credit!

Speaking of individuals, I'd like to publicly thank Elizabeth Alraune for all the help she had given this project. If you get a chance, you should check out her writing project called Letters of Love. She's a talented writer and great friend to know!

Nominated Auditions and Request to Spread the Word!

This week Dan Pavlik, the writer/director of Nominated, will be holding auditions for the film. He has had to arrange for a second day of auditions, and sadly has had to turn people away.

Dan would love to see everyone, but it's just not possible. For a person in that position, it certainly is a good problem to have.

Should he not be able to find what he needs during the two days of auditions, there will be other possibilities to pursue. So, if by some chance you aren't scheduled for any of the upcoming auditions, stay in touch, as you never know.

Working in conjunction with J.E. Talent, a San Francisco based talent agency that has been helping with the administration of the casting process, and feeling like he has many talented people to choose from, Dan is certain he'll get some really great fits for the roles.

While I'd love to be there during the process, I won't be able to, however, Dan is likely to have some behind the scenes footage, and maybe some pics, to share afterward that you and I will both be able to see. :-)

One role that won't be auditioned those two days is that of "film sponsor." You can help to get this movie made without an audition by going to the Nominated Sponsor Page, and submitting your 150x150 advertisement. As the momentum builds, there will be more traffic to the site, and you will have the benefit of all of those who come after you. Plus you get to be a part of, and contribute to, something pretty special.

Abraham Lincoln's Big Gay Dance Party, the critically
acclaimed play written by Aaron Loeb, was performed
in San Francisco last November through January and has
now been selected for a run at the New York
International Fringe Festival (Fringe Festival Website)
from the 15th until the 31st of August.

So...What does this have to do with the movie Nominated?

It just so happens that this play also has a major role in
moving the filming of Nominated from August to September
because one of its actors - Brian Degan Scott - is also
a key actor in Nominated. Well, ahem, the *star,* really.
And, since Brian, like the rest of us, has yet to figure out
how to clone himself, he can't be in two places at once.

The yearly festival, showcasing hundreds of performances
from around the world, has produced many Off Broadway
hits including Urine Town (which subsequently moved to
Broadway and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards),
Dog Sees God, Charlie Victor Romeo and the musical
adaptation of Debbie Does Dallas (for more Fringe success
stories go to FringeNYC Success).

The exact dates and venue specifics for Abraham Lincoln's
Big Gay Dance Party have yet to be established, but as
soon as the details are known, I'll post them here, in
case you will be able to go see Brian perform in NYC.

According to Dan (for first time readers, the writer and
director) Brian performing Off Broadway is an exciting
development, and allows more time for pre-production and
creative fund raising for the budget - which includes the
Executive Producer Essay Contest. (Have YOU entered yet?)

And since this entry seems to be all about Mr. Scott,
(I certainly hope it won't go to his head) remember
that he will also be a guest on World of Perspective

Dan Pavlik & Ken Newman Get Validated

There are The Tonys and there are The Oscars. There is also another
prestigious award that isn't heard of much outside of the industry
that is recognized by it, and that award is The Telly.

According to their site, "The Telly Awards honor the very best local,
regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well
as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the
Web. Since 1978, our mission has been to strengthen the visual
arts community by inspiring, promoting, and supporting creativity.
The 29th Annual Telly Awards received over 14,000 entries from
all 50 states and 5 continents."

Interestingly, one of the reasons they invite people to submit
their work is to "Receive validation for a job well done." I pick that
particular one because that has been one of the words -
VALIDATION - that is very much associated with this film and
its story, as well as the story of the writer/director, Dan Pavlik.

How fitting as this film is gearing up for production that a work
that was directed by Dan and co-written by Dan and Ken Newman,
and featured Ken as an actor in the short, were just notified that
they won the Telly Silver Award - their highest honor. Not only
did they win one award, they won 3 in the categories of
Corporate Training, Use of Humor, and Copywriting.

(These awards are in addition to the 5 other Dan has won in
previous years).

One must consider, even if briefly, even if just in good humor, that
this must be a good sign that two people involved in this project
have been recognized - validated - by an organization that is as
highly regarded as the Tellys (at least you could feign a little
excitement, perhaps?)

In all seriousness, I think Dan and Ken deserve *APPLAUSE.*
It truly is awesome news, and hopefully you are beginning to
see why I am so excited about helping out where I can. Perhaps
it'll spur you on, too? Dan still needs all the help he can get.
Very few works of art are completed without some help, and
some with a lot of help!

First "Essay" Arrives! When Can We Expect YOURS?

Recently, "Director Dan" announced a new contest.

In just 50 words, tell why you should be an
Executive Producer for the film. The catch,
besides the 50 character limit, use the words
Vindictive
Superficial
Validation
Sleazeball
Gravy

Some have told me they're not entering the
contest because they don't "do essays."

Perhaps consider that it's really just a
couple of sentences. Maybe it will make
it easier to take a stab at it. Most essays
you have to make up in totality...in this case,
you already have 5 of the words to work with.
One Tenth of your work is already done for you!

Others have said it's not for them. Yes,
the winner will get IMDB credit, and perhaps
for some it will mean more than for others.

However, wouldn't it be really cool to see
a movie in a movie theater with your name in
the credits on a large screen?

Some may also be swayed in terms of making
the payment. Please know that you can use
your credit card, without having a Paypal
account. In addition, you can now submit
your entry via mail, if you would prefer
to send a check.

This is likely the first time that a
contest of this type has been held. Wouldn't
it be fun to get in on it? This might be
a movie for the history books. You never
know when history will be made, and then
it's too late to be a part of it.

Ok..so that might be a little much...but

Dan Pavlik is a video producer by day, script writer by night, and lately, mostly a fundraiser. He spends the bulk of his time working to secure funds for his critically acclaimed comedy script, Nominated. He recently held an auction, and is currently running two other promotions - one with wine, the other with coffee. A couple of days ago he unveiled an essay contest with the prize being the title of Executive Producer on his film. All of this is a means to an end, which is raising $200,000.00 to cover the movie’s budget.

The script, which Pavlik co-wrote with writing partner David Baptist of Pleasanton, was selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as being in the top 5 percent of 5,262 amateur scripts submitted to their 2008 Nicholl Fellowship for Screenwriting. The comedy was also selected as a semi-finalist in the 2009 Cinestory Screenwriting Awards, the winner of which will be announced later this year.

Bolstering Pavlik’s confidence in his material, many well-known actors have also expressed interest in the script, including Carl Lumbly of the TV show Alias. Carl recently signed on to play a supporting role in the movie. Other actors who have read the script include Willie Aames, Mariel Hemingway, and Brian Copeland of KGO Radio. Pavlik is also actively pursuing Dan Aykroyd to play a role.

So, with all this support, you’d think funding would be a slam dunk, right? Not the case. With a tough economic climate and a barren credit market, Pavlik has turned to what he calls “micro-funding” opportunities. He started a campaign called the “Coffee Challenge” which asks supporters to give up one Starbucks beverage and donate that money to the Nominated cause, and even enrolled his daughter, Sophia, to aid in the effort creating a video that can currently be seen on YouTube. Additionally, a local wine bar, Vida y Vino, is running a promotion all summer which donates a 25% of the proceeds from their “Director’s Cut Wine Flight” to the project.

To make a film independent of studio support and funding (especially in this environment) Pavlik is "encouraged" to be creative. He just unveiled his latest endeavor, which he hopes will go “viral” on the internet. It’s called The Executive Producer Essay Contest, and it gives contestants fifty words or less to explain why they should be the movie’s Executive Producer. There is one catch; each essay must include five words supplied by Pavlik: vindictive, superficial, validation, sleazeball, and gravy. That, and a $25 entrance fee, is all it takes to be in the running for the on-screen credit as Executive Producer. Along with the title, the winner also receives IMDB.com credit, one not easily come by.

The project is slated to shoot in the fall of this year, in locations spread around the Bay Area, as well as in Arnold, California. Pavlik and his team are furiously casting actors, securing locations, and aligning resources, all while promoting his film and essay contest on places like Twitter, Facebook, and Craigslist.

Well, the party is over.

What a tremendous effort from all who contributed to the food, the decorations, the entertainment. There are so many to thank for their efforts on behalf of Dan Pavlik, and the film.

I am sure Dan (or "Danny," as many who have known him for a while call him) is trying to recuperate after all of the planning that went into it. The organization was flawless and, in the process of interviewing several guests at the party for World of Perspective Radio Show, I found out just why it is that Dan is so good at planning parties (it is apparently no secret to those who know him).

I am working on editing the interviews, and once it is completed, a player will be posted on this page as well as on the movie site, so you can listen and get some insight into those involved with Dan and the project. No one person can ever do anything on his own. If those who stand behind Dan are any indication of how successful this film will be - it is clear to me that it will you will soon be seeing the amazing Nominated in a theater near you.

I came away with the idea that to know Dan Pavlik, is to want to support Dan Pavlik. He has a community of people around him that have known him for years. Not only have they been around, they're there to support him with this dream. The support is in no small part due to the fact that it seems that Dan is the type of person who is supportive and loyal to those in his life. It is unlike anything I have ever seen before, and was impressive and amazing to be around.

movie launch party.

It's About More Than "Just" Making a Movie

When Dan Pavlik was considering his options,
one that he came to as a father,
was a no-brainer.

How could he do something that
incorporated what he loved
(movie making), and make a difference?

The result is the Not for Profit
Educational Films of America.

It is an organization that he has
set up to support those who want to
make films. What is different
about how he approaches it,
over what is in the world already,
is the idea that there are
aspiring, talented filmmakers
who have difficulties in creating
their visions, due to not having
access to costly filmmaking equipment.

The way that "for profit"
companies work is counterproductive
to the creative risks that sometimes
need to be taken to have a worthy
project see the light of day.

A for profit company wants to see
certain things, often including a
proven track record. And how does
one get a proven track record
in a field laden with significant
obstacles?

In the "for profit" world,
worthy projects often are left unmade
because there isn't any support to
get them made. That is where
Educational Films of America comes in.

Since the organization is set up
as a Not for Profit, it doesn't need
to see the same bottom lines as a
for profit company would need to see.
It is then able to take calculated
risks based on different criteria.

In addition, it approaches the process
differently. Instead of funding a
project in its totality, the resources
of the organization provide the source
of equipment, as well as the support
structure to get the word out.

Other film non profit organizations
often support the documentary style of
filmmaking, and Dan thought it was time
for an organization to support the kind
of movies that we see more commonly
see in our homes and movie theaters.
After all, they have a great potential
to impact our culture, our tomorrow,
and our children.

Educational Films of America has a
specific intention, help movie makers
make the kind of movies that address
common societal themes such as diversity,
substance abuse, tolerance, and education
in a way that can inform and educate in
a medium that we appreciate and give
much of our time and attention to.

By supporting the movie Nominated,
you will be supporting more than just
the making of a film that has been
recognized by the Academy that award
the Academy Awards, you will be supporting
more than just a comedy by a great guy,
you will be supporting other filmmakers
who believe that they can tell a tale
that is worthy for us to hear, and can
make a difference for us and those we
care about.

organization is a not-for-profit,

A Twitter Partnership is Born

Dan Pavlik a/k/a @nominated on Twitter is a friend
of Ken Newman a/k/a @kennewman on Twitter. Ken
Newman and Elizabeth Alraune a/k/a @Jolope on Twitter,
"met" and Elizabeth invited him to be on her radio show,
World of Perspective Radio. Ken graciously accepted,
and at the same time, introduced her to Dan Pavlik,
the writer/director of Nominated (a film that Ken will
have a role in). In turn, Elizabeth invited Dan to
also be on her radio show. Got that?

Elizabeth - that would be me actually - became a quick
fan of both Ken and Dan. And, just like any fan, I
wanted to know what I could do to help the project.
I thought for sure that it was a BIG movie, and why in
the world would Dan want or need my help. However, I
came to find out that while the project deserves to be
a BIG movie, it is actually one of many that is small,
independent, and in need of some assistance, well, maybe
a lot of assistance.

So...just like any good virtual friend would do, I
stepped up to see what I could do to help. It just so
happens I have my own blog, and like to write, as well
as have a few other talents that might be helpful to
see two people that I admire (as well as others I may
come to admire - as good folk tend to gravitate to one
another) succeed at a worthy venture.

We all need help day to day, and even more so when
reaching for the things that are outside of the realm
of our daily experience. I am happy to help in any way
I can and, just like a friendship of any type, the
best reward is to get to do something you love while
benefiting something worthy of expression. It's also
why I have my radio show. Lots of people have worthy
expressions, and need a way to get them out, and we
all have our strengths. In my opinion, we all need
to do as much as we can to help another.

While Dan does what he can to get the project moving
forward, you will likely find me here, helping him put
a voice on his activities...kinda like a multi-media
documentary, if you will.

Dan Pavlik, Director, Producer, and Writer of the film Nominated, will be a guest on World-of-Perspective-Radio.com on BlogTalkRadio.com on April 16, 2009 at 6PT/9ET.

Dan has been a professional video producer for 14 years. By most measures, he has had a successful career, and yet he is risking what he has worked for by diving into the shark infested waters of independent film with the idea of a movie that he dreamt about two and a half years ago.

While he will be sharing his story, everyone has a "thing" that they wish they could do, might do, wouldda, shouldda, couldda done. As Dan says, “I may be the director of this film, however, I am also in the role of Director of my own life, just as we all are.” He notes that in the current economy, especially, it is important to see possibilities in spite of closed doors. In the world of film he, as the director, makes choices to make the best film possible, "and the choices I make aren't always advised, popular, and are sometimes risky. There are parallels to how I am in my life." We all have the possibility to direct our own lives, and he will be discussing the risks that he is taking in the context of having a life lived that is true to himself in spite of seeming obstacles.

Elizabeth Alraune, host of World-of-Perspective-Radio.com, welcomes Dan as a guest amidst a line up of other shows from an eclectic group of guests which have included Janet Thornburg (numerologist), Patrick Mathieu (The Bar Code Guy), and Greg Mooers (Life Camp). Finally! A local business has stepped up to sponsor the project. Vida Y Vino, a local wine bar & bistro has started a wine promo that will help to generate funds and attention for the movie.
The ever-so-generous Audrey Scott, owner of VyV, came up with the idea to sell a "flight of wine" and have a portion of each sale go toward our cause. The flight consists of four glasses of wine, from the Coppola Winery no less, and will run all summer until we shoot in August!

Putting the "Fun" Back in Fundraising

Working hard to gather auction items for our big launch party and fundraising extravaganza. I've had some really cool - and generous - donations uh... well... donated. Shannon and Gary Gilkison graciously gave a private wine tasting to a winery in Santa Cruz, for 30 people! Patti Twain came forward with a backup & recovery software package worth $1500. Awesome. Monica and Jay James have donated something that I believe is priceless, a private dinner for eight with Jay. Jay is a Master Sommelier. One of only 171 in the world! Pretty incredible. So, we'll partner with a restaurant to put on an unforgettable evening for 8 lucky wine nuts.

New Movie Teaser Coming Soon!

We shot footage for a new movie teaser that will be up on the website in the next two days.
We got some great help from Brian Danker, an SFPD Officer and great actor.
Brian had a nice scene in Milk, in which he played opposite Academy Award winner Sean Penn.
I think we will find a role for Brian in Nominated!

Also had a few donation trickle in. thanks to everyone who is contributing to the cause!

We're off to the races!
The website is up and live and we just set the date for a big fund raiser - May 16th!

In fact, we just got our first two donations; a $100 cash donation, very nice, and some gift certificates from Visual Image Salon in Fremont. THANK YOU!! Not bad for one day's work! The gift certificate and other donation will be for the silent auction we have at the May "launch party".

We WILL shoot in August of 2009 for 28 days. There will be 16 days shot in the SF Bay Area, and 12 days shot up in Arnold, California.
